In order to qualify for scattered site homes
and apartments, an individual must have a chronic mental illness
and be capable of living independently in the community with the
appropriate support services. Also, NAMI-DE must verify that the
applicant’s income is in the “very low” category and a criminal
background check is made. Two of the apartment buildings are
dedicated for occupancy by persons who are homeless and also are
mentally ill. Admittance to a supervised group home requires the
approval of the Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health
and the Service Provider who manages the home. These homes are
intended for residents who do not currently have the ability or
skills to live more independently at the present time but who do
not require the care provided in a hospital.
